We have a strong
emphasis on Literacy in our curriculum. The acquisition of skills in reading,
writing, listening and speaking are vital to all other areas of learning. Each
class devotes a daily 2 hour block to literacy and parents are encouraged to
become involved in the classroom activities.
St. Vincent’s was
fortunate to be part of the Oral Language Supporting Early Literacy
research initiative implemented by the Catholic Education Commission of
Victoria. The aim of this research initiative is to improve the oral language
skills of students in the early years, thereby resulting in a measurable
improvement in literacy performance.
At St Vincent’s we
also offer the Reading Recovery Program which is a one to one early
intervention program that provides an opportunity for students who, after one
year of schooling, have not yet established effective reading and writing
processes. The Reading Recovery Program provides daily specialist support for
students who require assistance with reaching the literacy benchmarks.
